The Best Reading Challenges for 2018
I'm a big fan of a reading challenge. There's something about checking off those boxes that makes reading even more motivating and exciting, and I love that the challenges always push me beyond my normal reading comfort zone, too. I've done several different challenges in the past, and I wanted to gather up the best ones this year to share with you all!
If you choose one of these, be sure to comment and let me know so I can cheer you on!
Happy reading, friends!
Modern Mrs. Darcy's 2018 Reading Challenge
How it works:
There are 12 categories on the list this year! If you sign up with your email address, a whole kit will be emailed to you with the printable list, a bookmark, and a fun phone wallpaper. This is the challenge I did last year and I loved it!
A few standout categories:
- A book recommended by a librarian or indie bookseller
- A book in translation
- A classic you've been meaning to read
The 2018 Christian Reading Challenge
How it works:
There are 4 sections to this one: Light (1 book every 4 weeks-- 13 categories), Avid (1 book every 2 weeks-- another 13 categories), Committed (1 book every week-- another 26 categories), and Obsessed (2 books every week-- a total of 104 categories). It's suggested to start with the light list, then go on to avid, and so on. If you completed every item on all the lists, you'd have read 104 books!
A few standout categories:
- A book with a picture of the author on the cover
- A book from a theological viewpoint you disagree with
- A book by or about a martyr
Book Riot's 2018 Read Harder Challenge
How it works:
There are 24 categories on the list this year (so about 2 a month!) with the focus of pushing yourself in your reading. There's also a group on Goodreads if you want ideas, support, and accountability!
A few standout categories:
- A book with a cover you hate
- A book published posthumously
- A book with a female protagonist over the age of 60
The 2018 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge
How it works:
There are 40 prompts in the main list, plus an additional 10 in the "advanced" category. There's a Goodreads group for this one too, if you're interested!
A few standout categories:
- A book about a problem facing society today
- A book with alliteration in the title
- Nordic noir (like, what even is this?!)

I have printed out all the lists and will try to work my way through as many of them as I can, but my #1 goal is to complete the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge again! I'm still finalizing my game plan for reading in 2018, but that's definitely on my list, and I think with the list of just 12 books, I'll definitely make it happen! (If you missed my update on how the MMD challenge turned out for me this year, you can find it here.)
